The monitoring and analysis of the industries’ competitiveness is implemented in various ways, on the basis of specialised studies carried out by external experts, through informal or institutionalised contacts (e.g. networks with Member States and the Pharmaceutical Forum) and in a dialogue with public authorities and stakeholders (e.g. industry associations, patient groups and other societal stakeholders). Since the first Community Directive was adopted a score of Community legislation has followed with the aim of achieving a single EU-wide market for pharmaceuticals. This single market should help not only to enhance the health of European citizens, but also to strengthen the competitiveness and research capability of the European pharmaceutical industry for generations to come.
